What causes back pain?

Many conditions can cause acute and chronic back pain. Often, acute pain that lasts less than six weeks occurs due to overuse of the muscles that support your spine. Muscle overuse is a common injury if you play sports or work a physically demanding job.

When you have chronic pain that lasts six months or longer, it may be due to an injury or a degenerative condition in your cervical (neck) or your lumbar (lower back) spine. These conditions include:

  • Arthritis
  • Scoliosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Osteoporosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Compressed nerve

Over time, these conditions can worsen and cause severe pain that limits your flexibility and mobility.

How is back pain diagnosed?

To better understand the root cause of your back pain, Dr. Mohiuddin and the Regenerative Pain & Spine team review your medical history, activities, and job. They perform a physical exam, checking your back for swelling and tenderness and testing your flexibility and range of motion.

Diagnostic imaging may be necessary to confirm underlying issues like a herniated disc or osteoporosis. This may involve X-rays or a computed tomography (CT) scan that creates images of your spinal structures.

After confirming your diagnosis, Dr. Mohiuddin creates a care plan using evidence-based treatment to provide you with long-lasting pain relief.

How is back pain treated?

Depending on the nature of your injury or disease, you may initially benefit from pain medications and anti-inflammatories. Dr. Mohiuddin may also recommend physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that support your spine.

If these therapies aren’t enough to ease your pain and improve your range of motion, he may suggest treatments like:

Shock wave therapy

Shock wave therapy uses high-pressure energy to stimulate the deep muscle tissues and trigger your body’s natural healing processes.

Epidural steroid injections

Epidural steroid injections deliver anesthetic medications and anti-inflammatories directly into the epidural space of your spine. These medicines reduce inflammation and disrupt the nerve signals that travel to your brain for long-lasting pain relief.

Spinal cord stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation uses low currents of energy to disrupt nerve signals in your spine. An implantable generator device is implanted in your spine and you control the energy using an external remote.

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine stimulates your body’s healing processes. Injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), amniotic tissue, and stem cells contain growth factors that encourage your body to produce new cells to replace damaged ones and heal soft tissue and bone damage.
